Historical Evidence that Voluntary Federation Can Quickly Replace the Status Quo in a Revolution

Murray Bookchin described the assertion that centralization is necessary to defeat capitalism as an “odious canard.” In my opinion, that is much too charitable.

This is the main sticking point between Marxists and anarchists. The former believe that central authority is needed to secure the revolution, whereas we anarchists insist that that is precisely what needs to be averted to keep reaction at bay. To paraphrase the Cuban anarchist, Enrique Roig San Martin: Power directly in the hands of the workers is revolution, power in the hands of an authoritarian government which the worker has no option but to obey is the counterrevolution.

Excellent piece.
