Support Seattle Public School Teachers boycotting the MAP test! Panel discussion at the UW February 28 (details below).

If you are receiving this, you were once upon a time a part of the famous Occupy Seattle Labor Caucus (or infamous depending on your point of view :). Hard to believe it’s been over a year since the Occupy Wall Street movement passed. Despite this we all know the struggle to build solidarity within the labor movement never ends. With this in mind, I wanted to inform you about a historic panel taking place next Thursday February 28 at the University of Washington. All the details are below my e-mail.

Seattle public school teachers have touched off a movement, that is garnering support all over the U.S., to boycott the Measures in Academic Progress standardized test. Yesterday, February 22, marked the final day of the winter testing window. Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Jose Banda threatened “consequences” for those teachers who were insubordinate and refused to administer the test. Still the teachers at Garfield, Ballard and Chief Sealth High Schools along with the Center School and Orca K-8 refuse to administer the test despite these threats.

Please join us in solidarity with these brave teachers and help spread the word by forwarding the announcement below. The Scrap the Map website lists all the ways your union (or you as individual) can help support their struggle. Thanks for your time!

Let me know if you have any questions.

In solidarity,

More info:

Seattle teachers at Garfield High School, Ballard High School, Chief Sealth High School, the Center School, and Orca K-8 School voted to stop administering the widely used, yet highly unfair standardized Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. They are now facing threats of “consequences” for refusing to give the test. Students and parents are joining the struggle in defense of their teachers and their right to a quality education. The outcome of this grassroots movement will have an enormous impact on the future of resistance to high stakes testing around the country.
Their struggle is our struggle!
